In His Word
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105

Matthew 10

What information does the chapter contain?

– The names of the twelve (:2-4).  This is the first time in the Bible we find the names of all twelve apostles: “Simon (Peter), …Andrew…; and James the son of Zebedee, …John…; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew…; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot,…”

– Jesus sent out the twelve.  The whole chapter deals with His instruction to them before He sent them.  Some people refer to this as the limited commission because He told the twelve, “Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (:5-6).  They had miraculous power (:8), but they had little else (:9-10).

How can we apply the chapter to our lives?

“…be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves” (:16).  The wolves are still around.

“…it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved” (:22) – so keep enduring.

“A disciple is not above his teacher,… It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher” (:24-25).  Don’t feel that you deserve to be treated any better than Jesus was on earth.  It is “enough,” an honor, to be treated like Him.

– Have rightly placed fear.  “Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (:28).

– Confess Christ and live, or deny Him and die (:32-33).

– Love Christ more than everyone – including self – and follow Him (:35-38).

Any comments?

Have a great day in His word!
