In His Word
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105

Matthew 17

What information does the chapter contain?

– The transfiguration (:1-13).  This event included three great people representing three eras – Moses (the old law), Elijah (the prophets), and Jesus (the new law).  God made it clear that Jesus is now the one to be heard and followed.

– Casting out a demon (:14-21).  Jesus cast a demon out of a boy – something His disciples could not do “because of the littleness of your faith.”

– Jesus prophesied His death and resurrection (:22-23).  While He just told His disciples this truth in the last chapter, He again tells them – probably to drive home the point and attempt to prepare them for what was going to happen.

– Paying taxes (:24-27).  Every Jew was required to pay a temple or tribute tax.  Jesus implied to Peter that, since He is the Son of God the King, He was under no obligation to pay the tax.  Since others would not understand that fact, Jesus said He would still pay the tax.  Peter would find the money in the mouth of a fish!

How can we apply the chapter to our lives?

– Listen to Jesus.  Just as Peter and James and John needed to listen to Him over anyone else, so do we need to do the same today.  Only He can save.

– A little faith can accomplish great things.  With only a little faith we can move mountains.

Any comments?

Have a great day in His word!
