Genesis 3-4 – “Now the serpent was more crafty…”

 1Mon - history

Genesis 2 ends with a beautiful scene: “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” (:25).  Everything changed forever in the next chapter where we are introduced to Satan.  This crafty deceiver went to work on Eve, convincing her that the fruit God had forbidden them to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil – lest they surely die – was worth eating; and then she convinced Adam (3:1-6).  Their innocence turned to shame and then fear and caused them to hide from God (:7-10), with their sin leading to them being sent out from the garden (:22-24).  Never being satisfied, Satan then crouched at the door of their son Cain, desiring for his anger to lead to the murder of his brother Abel (4:1-8).  Cain’s sin led to him being driven from the presence of the Lord (:9-16).  Satan was just getting started with the first family, and he continues to deceive people today and lead them away from God.

Fortunately for us, God already had a plan for man to be able to overcome Satan and sin.  He told the serpent, “ And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” (3:15).  God’s word will continue to prophesy of the coming Seed as we work our way through it.

Have a great day in His word!
