Nahum – “the oracle of Ninevah”

3Wed - prophets

Ninevah repented when Jonah preached to it and was shown mercy (Jonah 3-4), but then the city returned to sin and faced God’s judgment.  “A jealous and avenging God is the LORD;… Who can stand before His indignation?” (Nahum 1).  “Though Nineveh was like a pool of water throughout her days, now they are fleeing” and would be plundered (2).  “And it will come about that all who see you will shrink from you and say, ‘Nineveh is devastated! Who will grieve for her?’ Where will I seek comforters for you?” (3:7).

Like Ninevah, we can fall back into the sin we once escaped.  If we do, then also like Ninevah we will face God’s judgment, and our last state will be worse than the first (2 Peter 2:20-22).  Don’t take God’s grace for granted.

Have a great day in His word!
