Numbers – “take a census”

1Mon - history

The book of Numbers gets its name from the census/numbering of the men 20 years old and above at both the beginning and toward the end of the book (1; 26).  While the numbers are almost the same – 603,550 vs. 601,730 (not counting the Levites – 1:49) – the men are not.  “But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.  For the LORD had said of them, ‘They shall surely die in the wilderness.’  And not a man was left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.” (26:64-65).

Throughout the book we find various events taking place that led to the death of the generation of those who had left the land of Egypt.  We also see how God spared Joshua and Caleb for their faithfulness.  Jesus later said that many will follow the broad way to destruction, while only few will follow the narrow way to life (Matthew 7:13-14).  Even when the numbers are stacked against us and we find ourselves in the minority, it still pays to be faithful to God.

Have a great day in His word!
